Survey Set To Reveal IT Use In Optics
August 22, 2008
A major study of the use of IT in optics is expected to reveal the extent to which independent practices are embracing the benefits of technology for management, marketing and clinical advancement.

Optisoft conducted the last major survey of IT in optics three years ago, and is conducting the latest one, but the rapid pace of innovation has raised many new questions.

“Three years ago we would not have considered that electronic ordering and the availability of electronic lens catalogues would have become the norm for many opticians,” said Keith Sheers, Optisoft Managing Director.

To be mailed to all independent practices and small groups, the survey will question:

•current IT infrastructure and plans for the future
•practice management applications used within the practice
•integration of diagnostic technology
•preference for lens catalogues online
•contact lens supplier links
•preferred product ordering systems
•investment in IT during past three years
•future expectations of practice management system functions

The survey will also ask respondents to rank their practice-building initiatives in order of priority and covers investment in IT, shopfitting, diagnostic technology, local Press/PR support, and staff training.

“Three years ago our survey collated a good profile of how the optical market was using IT, and in that time advances in dedicated optical software have moved on considerably. We are very keen to see how much these advances are being embraced, and what the profession’s expectations are for the future,” added Keith Sheers.
